Hanukkah Helpers
Thank you all for helping to provide Hanukkah gifts for needy youth in the Louisville area. For those who have not visited Temple Shalom in November/December (ANY year), this project involves a beautiful handcrafted Hanukkiah (Hanukkah Menorah) which sits outside of our Judaica Shop. On this menorah are cards, each with the fictitious name (in accordance with Maimonides' levels of tzedakah) of a child with his or her gender and clothing sizes. Members (and some non-members) select cards and purchase outfits and toys for the child (infant through age 18). When finished, the unwrapped gifts are brought back to the temple with the matching card. Two of our members, Joanie Sonnheim and Sharon Ran (who first developed the Hanukkah Helpers project), coordinate the distribution of gifts through the Jewish Family and Vocational Services, keeping the donors and donees anonymous.
Merry Mitzvah
The Jewish community-wide "Merry Mitzvah" project began in 2002 with Temple Shalom spearheading the Maryhurst Girls' Home project. Maryhurst is an intensive residential treatment program with on-campus school for troubled adolescent girls and boys. Temple Shalom's Maryhurst Day is jointly sponsored by W.O.T.S. and the Tikkun Olam committee. All adult congregants, as well as others from the Jewish community, are welcome to participate in this program (Temple Shalom teen girls ages 16 and up can also help). A group will go to Maryhurst on Christmas day and provide brunch for the girls. We also socialize, play games and do crafts.
Mitzvah Day
Mitzvah Day at Temple Shalom is held several times a year. It's a way to get involved for a morning and help make our building and grounds a little nicer. There are lots of things to do for our Temple, including: yard work, cleaning, painting, repair work, etc. Watch the upcoming events calendar and your newsletter for this special day to get together and make our Temple home a better place.
Mother Bear Project
Teddy bears are being knitted and crocheted across the world for the Mother Bear Project, a non-profit, non-denominational humanitarian organization. The hand-worked bears are sent to children in Africa who have lost parents to HIV/AIDS, and many of the children have the disease as well. The bears are not difficult to make, don't require much material and allow the crafters many ways to be creative and put their own stamp of love on each bear. It's a wonderful way to bring hope, comfort, and love in a simple gift. Please check out the website at www.motherbearproject.org to see and read about other ways to help.
