Parashat Vayechi

Vayechi (“He Lived”) is the final Torah portion in the Book of Genesis. It opens as Jacob prepares for his death, making his son Joseph swear to bury him in the Cave of Machpelah. Jacob blesses Joseph’s two sons and his own 12 sons and then dies. Jacob’s sons bury him. The portion ends with Joseph’s death.

Shemot (“Names”) is the first Torah reading in the Book of Exodus. It opens describing the enslavement of the Israelites in Egypt. Moses is born, placed in a basket on the Nile, and adopted into Pharaoh’s household. He later encounters God at a burning bush and begins his mission of demanding that Pharoah let the Israelites go.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Israel Daniel Shapiro will be in Louisville to speak with our Jewish community on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 6:15 p.m. in the JCC auditorium.
A career diplomat, Shapiro served as ambassador to Israel during the Obama administration from 2011 to 2017. Previously, he was the senior director for the Middle East and North Africa in the National Security Council. Following his time as ambassador, he became a distinguished visiting fellow at the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University, but he returned to public life in 2021 when. President Biden named him a special liaison to Israel on Iran.
A graduate of Brandeis University, where he majored in Near Eastern and Judaic studies, Shapiro went on to earn his master's degree in Middle Eastern politics from Harvard University.
He speaks Hebrew and Arabic.
